Föredrag – Beyond GLMs: A Reproducible Benchmark of ML and Causal Methods for Motor Pricing
Session Summary
GLMs remain the operational backbone of motor pricing, but how do they actually stack up against modern machine learning in production? In this session, we will get to experience a fully reproducible, end-to-end benchmark across three open global portfolios: the French freMTPL2, the Swedish Wasa motorcycle, and the Australian De Jong & Heller datasets.
We will see classical Tweedie and frequency-severity GLMs pit against gradient-boosted trees, GLM-boosted hybrids, and neural architectures. Moving beyond pure prediction, we will explore
causal territory with double-machine-learning estimates of price elasticity and uplift segmentation.
Crucially, we will see these models evaluated on the exact criteria actuaries must defend in front of a model risk committee: out-of-time deviance, calibration, monotonicity, and stability under covariate shift. Attendees will walk away with candid lessons on where ML genuinely lifts predictive power, where it silently breaks calibration, and how causal methods materially change the commercial answer.
Bonus: We will all gain access to a public GitHub repository to replicate every single result the very next morning.
Key Takeaways
- Trade-offs: We will get a clear quantification of the predictive-lift, calibration, and stability trade-offs across GLM, GBM, hybrid, and neural architectures.
- Causal ML: We will learn how to apply double-machine-learning to estimate price elasticity defensibly under SS1/23 model-risk principles.
- Open Workflow: We will discover how to adopt a reproducible, open-data benchmarking workflow as a standard internal practice for model-challenger work.
